Cupboard Map

My cupboard map.  It's just a photo of my cupboard that helps me see what's inside, especially the inner part.
a
a
I taped it behind the door for convenience.
a
a
Due to a recent trip to Chatuchak, I had to re-organize my cupboard.  I just can't help it!  I always get gigil with the stacks of plates, bowls, platters, etc. that I see there.  Plus they're super cheap!  It makes me ker-razy!
a
a
Mom said that when buying dinnerware, the rule of thumb is to get at least 12 so that when you have guests over, hindi magkukulang ang props mo.  We don't really entertain on a regular basis but even if there's just three of us at home, I try to buy a dozen of everything just in case :)  Unfortunately, since I don't have much space, not to mention I can't carry that much stuff since I prefer to shop alone (I get pressured when the hubby's with me because he gets inip AND he vetoes some of my purchases -- grrr!), I have to practice restraint when I shop.  Boo!
a
a
Anyhoo, since my collection is getting bigger, I decided to make a map of my cupboard for two reasons: #1 so I can easily see what's inside and know where everything is, especially at the farthest end; #2 so I can actually use all of them and not just the ones that I always see.  Sayang naman if I bought them and I don't get to use them, right?

Aly's Store

In a small corner in our kitchen, we have what we call Aly's store.  This is where we keep all our snacks and goodies.  Heehee!
a
a
Aly's store.  Heehee!  The top layer is where we put our bread, sandwich spreads, opened bags of chips (which I keep closed using binder clips from the office supplies section), Lock n' lock containers with biscuits and nuts, coffee maker and sandwich toaster.
a
a
And yes, we have two kinds of bread at home: white bread with no crusts for Aly and wheat bread for me and Richard.  Bigla kasing nagbago ang taste ni Aly.  It's like she woke up one day and decided that she doesn't like the crusts on her bread anymore.  If she slices the crusts off herself, wala ng natitira sa tinapay.  Thank goodness for those crustless ones!  We also have two kinds of peanut butter: Goober Grape for me and Aly; plain for Richard.  Hay!  This small family of three is quite demanding ha!  Mommy has to cope with all those requests!
a
a
The middle layer has cereal, chips, candy (in plastic containers), soda water for Richard's drinks and some of my baking supplies at the back.
a
a
Shhh!  Don't tell my mom that I have a stash of chips at home.  Heehee!  But I have a good reason for that.  We stock up on Lay's sour cream n' onion chips because they are not always available in our suking 7-11 or at Top's Supermarket.  We don't like naman the other flavors like seaweed, squid...para syang ginto so we kinda hoard when we see it.
a
a
The bottom layer has plastic bins for my baking stuff like pans, food color cupcake liner, cookie cutter...This is also where I keep my paper towels.  I also have another plastic bin with more chips and chocolates.
a
a
Richard brought home our favorite Chippy for pasalubong.  Notice that we have two kinds of Chippy as well: red for Aly, blue for me.  Demanding talaga!
a
a
Speaking of snacks, I want to share with you the one that I am currently addicted to:
a
a
Manora fried shrimp chips.
a
a
This is a local brand.  It's kinda like kropek but with a spicy kick (as expected with Thai food).  I learned about this through my friend Rose.  She served these when we were at her house and I can't stop thinking about them since then!  She bought me a few bags when we were at the lunch market and it has been a grocery staple from then on.  I prefer the smaller bags, though because once I open them, I can't stop eating!  Haha!
a
a
There you have it: our three-tiered happy corner at home.  Thanks for stopping by!

Grilled Sausage Pomodoro Pasta

I was inspired to come up with this dish after watching Jamie Oliver cook Pasta Puttanesca on the Lifestyle Network during our Christmas vacation. I love Jamie! I love Lifestyle Network! I can watch it all day. Too bad we don't have it here in our apartment in Bangkok :( I asked our sales agent if we can add more channels to our cable, but she said we can't anymore.
a
a
Anyway, I digress. So my first attempt was in my mom's kitchen. I used Hungarian sausage from Santi's and Hunt's canned tomatoes. This is the Bangkok edition. I wasn't able to find any Hungarian sausage and Hunt's canned tomatoes here. In fact, when I asked the lady at the TGM stall at Top's Supermarket if they had any Hungarian sausage, she gave me a funny look like I had grown a second nose or something. She said they only have German sausage. Eh kasi nga naman, TGM stands for Thai German Meat or something. Basta, Thai German sya. How silly of me!
a
a
Let me share with you the recipe. This is not Jamie Oliver's, ok. He made Pasta Puttanesca; this is Grilled Sausage Pomodoro Pasta. I was able to pick up a few tips from his show and I just used them on this recipe.
a
a
Here's how my workstation looks like. Two of my cooking essentials are: a glass of cold water because I drink a lot especially when I cook, and my clean-up bowl.
a
a
For easy clean up of onion skin, garlic peel, vegetable peel, etc.
a
a
First, you cook the pasta. You can use any kind. I only had linguine in my pantry that time.
a
a
Most people back home put oil in the water for the pasta. I used to do that too! But then I learned that you don't really need to put oil because you will drain the water anyway, so you're draining the oil too. You just need water and salt. So how do you keep your pasta from sticking? According to Jamie, when you drain it, you leave a little water. That will prevent them from sticking. This works best if you have a pasta pot (the one with holes on the cover). If you don't have a pasta pot, you can perhaps drain the water (but not completely!) using a colander, transfer the pasta together with the remaining water in a bowl.
a
a
You only add the pasta when the water comes to a rolling boil. This is not a rolling boil.
a
a
This is a rolling boil.
a
a
You just dump the pasta in, stir once in a while, and cook until al dente.
a
a
Now, let's move on to the sauce. You will need: olive oil, minced garlic, chopped onion canned tomatoes, salt + pepper, sausage and basil.
a
a
You need to grill the sausage first. I cut them into bite-size pieces for faster grilling.
a
a
The sunog part of grilling gives the sausage added flavor. While you're grilling, you can work on the pomodoro sauce.
a
a
Heat a good amount of olive oil in a pan, then add garlic. Be careful not to burn the garlic! Don't wait for it to turn golden brown, you just want it to "sweat" a little.
a
a
Add the onions and cook until transparent.
a
a
Add the canned tomatoes. The one that I got from the grocery is whole plum tomatoes so I had to mash them a little.
a
a
Simmer for around five minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
a
a
Add the sausage.
a
a
Toss the pasta in the sauce.
a
a
Here's another Jamie Oliver tip: you add the basil leaves last. The heat of the pasta and the sauce should be enough to cook it. In fact, if the basil is overcooked, it won't taste good.

Krisan's New Gadget

Look at what we brought home this weekend!

A brand new electric oven!! Yipee!!!

Let's open it, shall we?

We can't wipe the smile off our faces. Can you tell that we're very excited?

*Sigh*

That's the Boss delivering...

...our new baby :)

I actually got the idea from Jenn...Remember the BBQ party that we attended a couple of weeks ago? She brought a carrot cake that day -- which she baked at home -- and it was absolutely divine! I told her that it reminded me of my favorite carrot cake in Manila; the one with the carrot sign that also sells bibingka galapong (the name escapes me now). I was dyahe to ask her for the recipe (ahem, shameless parinig to Jenn! Haha!), but I remember her telling me that she used an electric oven to bake it, because gas ovens are not allowed in apartments here. Her oven is similar to an oven toaster, only it's bigger.

Ok, this is embarrassing, but that was the first time I heard about an electric oven. Ever. Ang alam ko lang kasi was the gas oven and the oven toaster. But I'm glad she told me about it kasi ngayon nagkaron na ko ng pag-asa mag-bake! I love baking! In Manila, I would bake every weekend -- cookies, cupcakes...I even enrolled in a one-day baking class at Heny Sison's school! And my masterpiece?
a
a
Alyannah's birthday cake.
a
a
A three-layer lemon chiffon cake with sugar icing, candy sprinkles,...
a
a
...and teddy bear-shaped butter cookies with sugar frosting.
a
a
Thanks to my mom's KitchenAid mixer, I can easily bake dozens of cookies and cupcakes in a single afternoon. But I don't have that kind of equipment here and since I was super, super excited to use my new oven (as in I had to use it as soon as we got home -- yeah, I was that excited!), I had to call on Betty for help.
a
a
Yes, this Betty. Betty Crocker.
a
a
I know, it's anticlimactic pero ok na yan to satisfy my urge to bake!
a
a
You can just imagine how happy I felt when I found out that it's possible for me to bake here in our apartment! I just need an electric oven! Jenn's idea stuck with me, but I was in no hurry to buy one -- until last week. I was at Central Plaza for lunch and as I was browsing through the small appliances section (I always check out their blenders because it's the next item on my to-buy list but I still haven't found the One), I saw that their electric ovens were on sale at 50% off!!! That only meant one thing...I. Must. Buy. On that same night, while we were having dinner, I made lambing to my husband and he told me that we can buy one on the weekend. Thus, my new baby was bought.

I heart my new oven!

My New Housewife Gadget

I'm not a techie so I don't get turned on by the latest gadgets. All those MB's, Gigs, and so and so's mean nothing to me. I would love to add more techie terms, but this is all I can think of. Haha! My husband bought me this laptop only because we needed one so we can stay in touch with our relatives back home. I have a phone, but it's low tech. I just bought it so I can call or text my husband when I need to meet him somewhere.

If there's something that I can truly lust for to the point that I will lose sleep just thinking about it, it's kitchen gadgets. Oh my, just thinking about the KitchenAid Artisan Mixer is making my heart beat faster. Corning Ware at 30% off?!! I'll be there at the snap of a finger. Hay...shopping for houseware is indeed my new addiction.

So what's my latest acquisition? A brand-new Tefal Food Steamer. Why a steamer? Here's why:

It's no secret that I'm a neat freak, just like Monica Gellar of Friends. It drives my husband nuts at times but hey, as a stay-at-home mom, I think it would be a shame if the house is not spic and span!

One of the things that I hate is a dirty, smelly kitchen. Ugh! Hate, hate, hate it! Just one whiff of that malansa smell totally ruins my day. That's why I rarely cook fried fish because I don't want the kitchen to have that fishy smell. Our apartment has poor ventilation. The last time we cooked fried fish in the kitchen, the stench did not go away until the next day even after soaping and scrubbing the stove area. So I have to be creative because I don't want my poor husband and daughter to eat chicken, pork, beef and shrimp all the time. We need to eat fish. They love fish!

I searched the internet for new ideas and I discovered Pinoy Cook. It's a blog by Connie Veneracion that features recipes that she cooked for her family, her own restaurant observations, and just about anything about Filipino food. She had a couple of steamed fish recipes which I really wanted to try. So I bought the ingredients and the steamer on the same week. Yeah, I was that excited.

For my steamer's debut, I tried the Steamed Tilapia recipe.
a
Here's our new steamer at work.
a
Steamed Tilapia with ginger and garlic. Sarap!
a
Richard and Yan loved the tilapia. I love that our kitchen had no malansa smell after I cooked it. In fact, it smelled really good! The aroma of ginger and sesame seed oil filled the entire kitchen and to me, it's the smell of culinary success. Now I can include fish in our weekly diet without having to deal with icky oil splatters and the dreaded fishy smell.
a
I also use the steamer for cooking rice and it's a lot better than using the rice cooker. The rice is more fluffy and there's no tutong so nothing is wasted. Neat! Richard and I are trying to lose weight so we don't eat rice in the evening. We only cook one cup for Alyannah and since our rice cooker does not have telfon lining, most of it sticks to the bottom and you can no longer eat it.
a
I love my new kitchen gadget! If you have a fantastic recipe that requires steaming, please feel free to share them with me :)
