Good Health for 2011

In 2008, I had a bit of a scare with my ASCUS health issue.  After a year of check-ups and close monitoring, I was given the all-clear by my OB-GYN.  That was right before my birthday in 2009.  I was supposed to get another check-up last year before my birthday but I was out of the country.  I was too busy then that I eventually forgot to reschedule my appointment.  I know, my bad.
a
a
This year, I promised the hubby that I will get that check-up.  It was one of the things that I worked on as soon as we got back from the holidays.  Last Saturday, my results came back.
a
a
It was normal.  Thank God!
a
a
I remember I mentioned this last time:
a

My doctor told me from the start that the abnormal cells will eventually clear up on their own, but it all happened faster than I expected. I think it’s because of two things: Cervarix and mom’s prayers. Cervarix is an HPV vaccine that mom, Angel and I have been taking. It’s comes in three doses which are taken in a span of seven months. I already have the first two; the last one will be in October.

More than medicine and science, I also believe that prayers really help. A LOT! So thank you mom for your prayers. Prayers not just for me, but for our whole family as well.
a
I asked my OB-GYN if my Cervarix shots helped and she said those shots can only prevent not cure.  So it wasn't the medicine after all.  It was the power of prayer.  For this, I want to thank mom because I know that we are always in her prayers.  So thanks mom!  I love you!

An Early Birthday Gift

My birthday is still a couple of days from today, but last night I received an early present. A great, early birthday gift.

Remember my ASCUS scare from last year? My OB-GYN and I have been closely monitoring it for a year now and I went back for another check up just last week. I received a call from BNH hospital last night. My test results came back. It's NORMAL :)

Thank you Lord!

I told mom right away because she’s been worried sick. Mom, you can stop worrying now. Everything’s going to be a-ok :)

Post Tonsillectomy

Last post na to about my tonsillectomy.

With Dr. Sakka in his clinic at BNH Hospital.

I finally had my follow-up appointment this afternoon -- it was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but Richard asked me to move it to Thursday so he can be with me. But yesterday was a public holiday here in Thailand so the doctor cancelled my appointment. It was then moved to this afternoon, but I still ended up going alone. Hay...

Anyway, what's more important is I was able to go to the doctor and he said everything's ok. No more pain in my throat and I can eat solid food. My only problem is, now that my tonsils are gone, there's more space in my throat and that makes drinking a bit difficult for me because I cannot do it the normal way (big gulps, straight from the glass, etc.). I now have to give extra effort (sip, swallow, swallow again) when I drink -- for the next two months at most.
a
a
Gosh, I'm a big non-alcoholic drinker pa naman. Non-alcoholic as in for example: everytime we'd eat out, I'd always order bottomless drinks because one glass is not enough for me, plus my idea of a refreshing drink is a tall glass of fruit shake or a glass Coke with lots of ice. Sigh...I guess two months is not that bad. I'll be back to normal in no time.
a
a
Oh, and the best part is, I lost 3 kilos. Woohoo!!! I just wish I won't gain it back. Haha!

Tonsillectomy Kwento

I'm baaack!

Not yet 100%, but I'm a lot better now than I was last Sunday. Gosh, for a minor procedure like tonsillectomy, isa lang ang masasabi ko -- MAJOR pain sya. As in, super sakit.

Simulan na natin ang kwento. I had my tonsillectomy Saturday morning, around 8:30am. We were told that we should be at the hospital by 7am. We were running late so we forgot to bring a camera. Buti na lang Richard's phone has one.
a
a
That's me checking myself in at BNH Hospital ER.
a
a
Pre-op preps - I had my x-ray taken and a blood test (I went fasting the night before)...
a
a
...in this photo, they were taking my bleeding time. They pricked my skin with some sort of needle and timed the bleeding (how fast I bleed or how fast I stop bleeding? Sorry I can't recall).
a
a
Oh, and this is probably the most important pre-op prep that they did -- they removed my nail polish *sob*. Sayang...the night before lang ako nagpa manicure/pedicure. Kung alam ko lang, dapat hindi na ko nagpalagay ng ruby red nail polish!
a
a
All geared up and ready for surgery! The green band is for the OR I think, while the white band is your regular hospital ID. The blue tube is for the dextrose and other meds.
a
a
After putting on all these bands and tubes, we went to the OR on the third floor. From there, I parted ways with Richard and Aly -- I went inside to get changed, while the two went up to the sixth floor to wait for me. The procedure lasted for an hour, but I was in the recovery room for about two hours. I was asleep the whole time. The last thing I remembered was the anesthesiologist talking to me and telling me to breathe deeply. Then one of the nurses told me that Dr. Sakka was on his way. I was feeling very groggy by then and when I put on the mask, I was knocked out quickly. The next thing I knew, the anesthesiologist was waking me up, saying that they're finished. I think I mumbled something then I went back to sleep. When I woke up, I was inside the recovery room and I was starting to feel the pain in my throat.
a
a
By the way, this is how my room at BNH looked like. It's called the Regent room, complete with dining table...
a
a
...a refrigerator, mini-kitchen area...
a
a
...and a bed couch. That's my little girl waiting for mommy. Ofcourse, there's also a bathroom complete with toiletries. Sakto lang si Aly sa couch na yan so we had to ask for an extra bed for Richard.
a
a
When I was wheeled into the room, Aly was asleep. According to her dad, she was asking for me every ten minutes until she finally got tired and slept. She probably sensed the commotion inside the room so she woke up and went up to me to give me a hug.
a
a
Richard also told Aly to sing for me. She paused for a while (probably thinking of what song to sing) then she started singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Twice! How sweet is that? I was really touched because I saw the love in her eyes. After her song number, she danced for me naman.
a
a
For my first meal, they gave me a cup of chocolate ice cream. But I wasn't able to eat it. In fact, I wasn't able to eat or drink anything on my first day because I couldn't swallow anything! It was horrible because on Saturday evening, I was really, really hungry pero wala ako magawa kasi nga my throat was super painful and I couldn't eat!
a
a
Flowers from the hospital staff.
Service at BNH hospital was excellent! Room service arrives promptly, same goes with your other requests. On Sunday morning, I had a parade of visitors starting with my doctor who checked my throat and gave me the go signal to go home, my OR nurses who wished me well, the pharmacist who gave us the meds along with instructions on how to use them, and lastly the cashier who collected out payment. At least Richard did not have to go down to pay for our bill because they go directly to your room!
a
a
That's the garden on the fourth floor.
a
a
If I wasn't asleep, I'd be watching tv kasi hindi pa ako makapagsalita.
a
a
Taking out the needle before going home...
a
a
...with my little nurse watching closely.
a
a
My first attempt at eating before going home. I had vanilla ice cream! Yum!
a
a
Uwi na kami!

Before I had the surgery, Richard told me na kung effective na pampapayat ang tonsillectomy, sya din daw magpapatanggal ng tonsils nya. Haha! That was before my husband saw how I was after the surgery and how much pain I was in. Ngayon ayaw na nya. That's ok, I wouldn't want to see any of my loved ones go through this much pain. It was sheer torture, I tell you. I felt weak from not being able to eat anything. I wanted so much to eat kahit soup lang and I was really thirsty but it was impossible for me to do so. Everytime Richard and Aly would eat in the room, I'd be so inggit. They had pancakes for breakfast and I imagined myself eating pancakes too. The night before they ordered fried rice...gosh, I love fried rice! Torture talaga!
a
a
Today, I can finish a full glass of water but it takes me around 30 minutes to do that. Normally it should take me a couple of big gulps, but for now I can only take small sips. It's like I'm learning how to use my new throat, you know. If I want to swallow a small piece of chicken, I have to do it at least three times. Maybe it's because my wounds haven't totally healed yet, but I hope I can eat and drink normally in time.
a
a
The good part is, I think I've lost some weight, but I'm not really happy about it kasi I lost it the hard way. But it's a good start. I hope I can maintain it even when I'm back to my normal eating habits.
a
a
The part that I love best is the TLC that I get from Richard and Aly. Aly gives me a constant supply of hugs and kisses everyday. The other night, she told her daddy that she wants to sleep beside me so she can take care of me so poor daddy had no choice but to sleep in Aly's room. My husband takes really good care of me -- like he always does. He had some funny moments like the time when he changed the bandage on my hand, he pressed the very spot where the needle went through so masakit sya. Then another time when he thought I had a fever so he pressed the back of his hand on my neck, but he pressed too hard on the spot where my tonsils used to be so masakit na naman sya. Clearly, with these bloopers, my husband is not nurse material. But his effort and the love and care that he gives is more than I can ask for.
a
a
Anyway, that's all for now. More updates in the days to come!

Krisan's Tonsillectomy

Ok, I'll make this quick and painless -- just how I'm hoping my tonsillectomy and recovery will be like.
a
a
I will finally part ways with my tonsils tomorrow, Saturday, 11 October 2008. When we came back from our weekend in Chiang Mai, I did not get better. In fact, last Tuesday, my husband gave me strict orders not to do any household chores and to get complete bedrest. He also said no cooking so I ordered room service.

Stir-fried chicken with garlic and oyster sauce.

Pero matigas ang ulo ko kasi I still did the laundry but ONLY because I thought I was feeling better and there were so many dirty clothes waiting to be washed! That's why on Tuesday afternoon, I was feeling worse.
a
a
On Wednesday morning, Richard brought me to the doctor for a check-up. That's when I told the doctor that I seem to have tonsilitis quite often -- like twice in six months, plus a hundred times when I was a kid -- so he asked me if I wanted to have my tonsils removed. We scheduled the tonsillectomy on 11 October and he sent me home with a prescription for meds.
a
a
There's an antibiotic, one for the swelling, a mucolytic + my regular folic acid.
a
a
Ugh, I hate drinking medicines. I really try to avoid them as much as I can because I'm allergic to certain medicines.
a
a
So there...tomorrow, I have a date with Dr. Sakka Na Takuathung. I'm not kidding. That's his real name.
a
a
See?
a
a
While a tonsillectomy is not really a big production surgery with the big incisions and all, I hope it goes well. I will be asleep when they do the tonsillectomy and I will be staying in the hospital overnight. My sister Angel said that it's a common procedure so I don't have anything to worry about. I have complete faith in Doc Angel so I'm thinking it will just be a walk in the park. Plus, Dr. Sakka Na said I can lose weight after the surgery because my throat will be painful so eating can be difficult AND I can eat ice cream! So I asked my dear husband to have a pint of Swensen's waiting for me when I wake up.

We Got Shot!

Immunization shots, that is. Flu for me and thyphoid (+ one more shot that I can't remember) for Aly.
a
a
All TMAP-EM employees and their families are required to get flu shots. Richard got his from their office clinic, Aly got hers from her pediatrician a couple of weeks back (even before TMAP's mandate), and I got mine last Saturday.
a
a
It was a funny experience because when it was Aly's turn, she cried and wailed like anything! I can't blame her because she had two injections (one on each arm). She knew what was going to happen so she started tearing up the moment the doctor said "ok". It was weird because the doctor was speaking to the nurse in Thai, but Aly understood what was going to happen next. The moment she saw the syringe, hala, she cried with all her might. Sabi ko nga, nabingi na kaming lahat sa room because of her crying. So when it was my turn, I had to put on a brave face for my little girl -- gotta show her that mommy's not afraid of these injections! I wasn't allowed to flinch, wince, or show any form of pain. Haha! Good thing I learned a technique back when I had my hepa shots -- you just need to relax your arm muscles and you won't feel a thing. Whew! I survived an otherwise humiliating incident. Haha!
