Lost in Bangkok AGAIN!: Bang Po + Chao Phraya River

This is the last set of photos that I took for my Ria + Kerwin in Bangkok kwento so before we proceed, let's have a recap. Ri + Kerwin were in BKK for four days and three nights (14-17 February 2009). On the first day, Saturday, went to Wat Pho, Chinatown, Pantip Plaza and Khao San Road + Patpong for Ri and Kerwin. We didn't go with them because the place is not child-friendly (wink wink) so we just dropped them off and headed home. We also didn't take any photos at Pantip because it was just a quick trip to buy some tech stuff for Ria's sister, Rica.
a
a
On their second day, Sunday, we first went to church, then Chatuchak and Klongsan for our aborted dinner cruise plans.
a
a
This, now, is day three. It was a Monday so it was just me, Ri and Kerwin. Our plan was to ride the river taxi along Chao Phraya River. Yeah, we've been there the night before, but we just crossed the river. This time, our trip will be longer, and we want to see how it looks during daytime. No exact destination, really. Sabi nga ni Ria, "bahala na si Batman".
a
a
The central pier for all river taxis, hotel shuttle (free for guests of the hotels along the river) and tourist boats is at Sathorn. To get there, we need to ride the BTS Sky Train from Chong Nonsi station to Saphan Taksin.

The boat was full so we had to sit in front. I was worried that we might get wet. Hehe!

High-tech ang bahay. Kahit gawa sa kahoy, may satellite dish naman.
a
a
Like I mentioned at the beginning, we didn't really have an exact destination in mind. We had intended to ride the river taxi up to the last stop, but we changed our mind halfway through the trip. Nagutom na kasi kami. So Kerwin checked his map to see which stop had the nearest mall.
a
a
We got off at Bang Po.
a
a
Now, according to the map, the nearest mall was only about one kilometer away, which was not so bad! So we walked. At first, we were thrilled to see a side of Bangkok that you will not normally see in guide books. Ri was even happy to see an old car! Puro bagong kotse lang daw kasi ang nakikita nya in the past two days.
a
a
It was hot. Really hot. We were walking under the heat. Pero malapit lang yung mall -- according to the map, so konting tiis na lang. I was soo looking forward to ordering a tall glass of ice-cold Coke! However, we noticed na medyo matagal na kaming naglalakad and there was no sign of any mall anywhere. I mean, we should be seeing a mall-like structure by now, but there were no buildings in sight! Uh oh... So we decided to ask for directions, pero good luck na lang sa min kung may mahanap kami na marunong mag english kasi nga we were not in your usual tourist spot.
a
a
The first person that we asked was someone sitting outside a store. Unfortuately for us, there was a tuktuk driver nearby who heard us asking for directions so nakialam sya, but he wasn't really much of a help. He just wanted to rip us off. He offered us many things like drive us to Khao San, bring us to a jewelry store, tour, etc., but we refused. Ang kulit nya! Gusto namin sya sakalin. So to get rid of him, we just asked him to take us back to the pier but he charged us Thb50!
a
a
We finally made it back to Bang Po pier, and we decided to go to Khao San since we were pretty much familiar with the place. Here are more river scenes.

On the boat: this area is for monks only.

Oops! Bawal pala tumayo dito sa likod, pero puno na kasi yung boat kaya dito kami nakatayo.

This is where we ate lunch. I forget the name of the restaurant.
a
a
This is what I ordered: Stir fried chicken with sweet chili and rice. Cute presentation! I asked the guy not to make the dish spicy, but it still came out super spicy! As in, sobrang anghang pero ubod ng sarap!

I forgot to mention that there are different types of boats available at Sathorn Pier. River taxis carry different flags. Express boats carry white flags, and they stop at all the piers. There's also blue, yellow and orange. There's a big chart where you will see all the stops that each boat makes. We rode on the orange boat, and we paid only Thb13 each. It's a flat rate.
a
a
I love all the new discoveries that we made during Ri + Kerwin's trip, but the river cruise is my favorite! Pag may bisita kami, I will make sure that they try out the river taxi. It's a faster and more relaxing way to get to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Khao San and Chinatown.
a
a
Btw, this was not the end of Ri + Kerwin's trip. From Chao Phraya river, we went back to Oakwood to pick up Aly from school, then we went to Platinum Mall. I didn't take any photos because I was busy shopping too. Hehe! On their last day, they did a little pasalubong shopping in the morning, then spent the rest of the afternoon in Khao San road. Talagang sinulit nila yung trip nila to the last minute! They only had an hour to spare before going to the airport.
a
a
To Ri + Kerwin, I hope you enjoyed your trip! Sabi nga daw ni Gracia, "nagpunta kayo ng Bangkok para ipasyal ako", and she's right! I really learned a lot from you two. Do visit us again, ok?

Khao San Road

Ria told me that Khao San Road was top priority on their itinerary. She wanted to see where they filmed some of the scenes from the movie The Beach. Khao San means raw rice in Thai. This street used to be a major rice market in Bangkok before it became a popular tourist spot. It is also known as a backpacker's haven because of the cheap accommodations available in the area. I haven't been to Khao San Road and based on the stuff that I've read online about the place, I knew we were in for a lot of surprises :)
a
a
Welcome to Khao San Road!
a
a
Bank on wheels. Talk about mobile banking!
a
a
We arrived in Khao San at around 5:30pm and the place was just starting to come alive -- food vendors are just starting to pour in, the stalls are still being set-up, etc. We figured that most of the people there probably partied until the wee hours of the morning at ngayon pa lang sila gumigising. We actually saw a few people na mukha talagang bagong gising.
a
a
Cool: foldable lamps.
a
a
Not cool: may bumibili kaya nito? Well, pag may kaaway ka, bigyan mo sya nito. Hehe!
a
a
Kerwin's first taste of street food. Fresh orange juice.
a
a
Kerwin shopping for shirts.
a
a
During our Khao San tambay, we tried out all sorts of street food! As in, nonstop kain but we enjoyed it. Who wouldn't? Hehe!
a
a
Street food #1: pancake roti with nutella.
a
a
First, they take out a piece of dough and they flatten it.
a
a
They also flip it from side to side.
a
a
Then they fry it in a lot of oil (ack!)...
a
a
...until it becomes crispy.
a
a
Look at all that Nutella! I was drooling na at this point.
a
a
Pero picture muna. Kerwin, bilis! Naglalaway na talaga ko!
a
a
It was YUMMY!!! How can you go wrong with Nutella?
a
a
Mandatory tourist shots. Lovers in Khao San. Heehee!
a
a
Ria with a tuktuk and the stariray tuktuk driver.
a
a
Street food #2: pita sandwich.
a
a
Richard chose lamb.
a
a
Sarap ba, sweetie?
a
a
Street food #3: pad thai with egg. Ri and Kerwin loved this.
a
a
We didn't buy barbecue, but I thought the concept of putting an exhaust fan on top of the grill was a brilliant idea. Genius ka, manong!
a
a
This is not really street food, but it was still part of our food trip. Italian gelato for me and my little girl. I had mint chocolate chip and Yan had cookies and cream.
a
a
Another unique idea. Advertisement on wheels. Loud music + loud decor, mapapansin ka talaga.
a
a
Pati yung driver agaw-atensyon.
a
a
Hilltribe women selling wooden frogs (the one that makes a croaking sound when you rub a small stick on its back) and all sorts of knick knacks.
a
a
Street food # 4: spring rolls.
a
a
A pint of Heineken for Richard and mango shake for me.
a
a
More scenes from Khao San road.
a
a
This is funny: Yan kept saying "babo, babo". Paulit ulit. I thought it was another one of her pauso words (she sometimes calls me googoo mommy) so I didn't think much about it. Then I saw this sign...
a
a
BA-B-Q (the Q was written weird lang so it looks like an O). Yun pala, Yan was reading this. Haha!
a
a
My lovey.
a
a
Khao San at night. Ri, what are you looking at?
a
a
Smile, mommy!
a
a
From Khao San road, we dropped off the lovebirds at Patpong. Hindi na kami makasama kasi the place is not exactly kid friendly. Hehe! They just wanted to see Bangkok's famous red-light district.
a
a
Ri and Kerwin wanted to try some local beer so they brought some home.
a
a
Tired after a long day. Imagine, we went to four places -- Wat Pho, Chinatown, Pantip Plaza (no photos kasi tech shopping lang), and Khao San Road all in one day! Five pala for Ri and Kerwin kasi they went to Patpong pa. But it was fun! I love that we made two new discoveries that day -- Wat Pho and Khao San Road. I will definitely recommend these two to our future visitors.
