Field Trip, Bottled Water and Why Husbands Can't Do Grocery Shopping

Aly's class was scheduled for a field trip yesterday but the weather was terrible when we woke up.  There was too much rain and some areas were flooded so the school decided to cancel.  I can just imagine the kids' disappointment.  Poor babies!  But it's all for the best.  If the weather was terrible, I'm sure the traffic will be horrible.  Worse, what will happen when they're in the middle of the expressway and you've got a van full of kids who need to take a bathroom break?  Yikes!

Anyway, the night before the field trip, I asked Richard to help Aly buy her baon. I wasn't able to go to the supermarket that day because I wasn't feeling well.  I asked them to buy the smallest bottled water they can find and this is what they brought home with them:

He bought Evian. At Thb40 per bottle.  Really now?

I didn't know if I was going to get mad or laugh, but I ended up laughing.  First of all, Aly wouldn't mind how much her water costs.  Her only concern is the taste.  She wants the clean, distilled water type taste, not the mineral water/buko juice type.  Plus, regular bottled water here costs Thb10-15 and they have many varieties too.  But with all the options out there, the hubby zeroes in on this.  Haha!  Ano pa kaya if he does our weekly shopping?  Patay ang budget!  Heehee!  Love you, sweetie!  This is why grocery shopping is my turf.  Ha!  Akala mo naman budget expert ako.

Tops Supermarket's Home Delivery Service

Y'all know that Tuesday is my grocery day.  Saturday would have been perfect; grocery shopping is a lot more fun when it's a family thing plus, I can buy an entire week's worth of groceries with Richard around to help me carry the bags.  But malls are always packed on weekends making shopping on Saturdays a terrible thing.  Grocery shopping is supposed to be fun and relaxing but with the crowded aisles and the long checkout lines, I'd rather do it alone than be stressed.
a
a
Why Tuesday, not Monday or Wednesday?  I observed that in my suking grocery, Tops Supermarket, they bring in new stocks on Tuesdays and Saturdays.  They have more cuts of meat, more veggies, etc.  I tried going on a Monday and a Wednesday, but they have better stocks on Tuesdays as far as meat and veggies are concerned.  Perfect, right?  The only problem is, when I buy on Tuesdays, there's no hubby to help me carry my grocery bags.  And no car too so I have to carry all the bags all the way to the taxi stand, then from the lobby through the parking lot and all the way to our tower.  Phew!  Sure, it's good exercise but I can't really carry heavy stuff because I will end up with either aching shoulders or a backache.
a
a
Today, however, I discovered the coolest thing in my suking grocery: home delivery!  Yay!
a
a
I signed up today for Tops home delivery :)
a
a
How it works: for a minimum purchase of Thb1,500 (Php2,100), Tops will deliver your groceries to your home.
a
a
The only catch is, for my family, Thb1,500 is a bit of a stretch because our average grocery tab is Thb800-1,000 (Php1,100-1,400).  We don't really need a lot since there are only three of us at home.  Plus, meat and veggies here in Bangkok is super cheap!  So, I had to buy a little bit more than usual to avail the delivery service.
a
a
The best thing that happened to grocery shopping since Nutella!  Haha!
a
a
This home delivery thing is the coolest thing ever!  I registered my bags at around 2pm so I had more time to go around.  It's super convenient!  I went home relaxed and looking fresh not like lantang gulay from carrying heavy bags.  Haha!  Goodbye shoulder and back pains!

Let me leave you with something funny that I found on the flyer:

Our First Grocery Shopping Day (+ rant about our delayed package)

Our package hasn't arrived yet (no thanks to Nippon Express!) so there's nothing to unpack, nothing to cook and nothing to eat! We survived our first day mainly on room service and food delivery (which is a lot harder than we thought because the person who answers the phone does not speak english). Thank God we brought enough clothes + one set of Richard's uniform (thanks to the domestic goddess in me!).

But that doesn't mean Nippon Express is off the hook. This kind of delay is unacceptable! We were supposed to schedule our sea freight on the first week of March but they said it's too early because it only takes two weeks to ship the items to Thailand. So it was moved to the third week. We were expecting to see our package in our room when we arrive but when we got here, not a single box was in sight.
a
Same thing with our air freight. They picked up our stuff four days before we left Manila and it's still not here. Richard called Nippon Express directly and asked his boys over at TMP to call their Manila Office and we were told that the earliest that we can get our package is on Thursday. We can't order room service forever because it's too expensive and getting delivery is such a hassle! We were left with no choice but to head to the nearest supermarket to buy supplies. Richard and I need retail therapy to relieve the stress that our shipper gave us.

So off we went to Tesco Lotus. It's only a couple of minutes away and the good thing is, Oakwood provides a shuttle that can bring their guests to Tesco Lotus, Central Mall and the BTS Sky Train Station.
Tesco Lotus is like SM Supermarket - from the items that they sell (the usual grocery items + clothes + appliances) and the number of people that go here. Back home, a lot of people were telling me that "masarap mag shopping dito sa Bangkok kasi mas mura kesa Manila". And they're right! I found Colgate toothbrush for only 8 baht. When converted, that's like 10 pesos! They also have nice storage items for as low as 30 baht. I also saw shrimp at 148 baht per kilo!

But there's a catch - most of the items that they sell there are written in Thai so we just relied on logos that looked familiar to be able to identify them.

We tried to stick to the basics or stuff that we needed immediately, but the longer that we stayed there, the more items we placed in our push cart! Our only relief was we did not spend much even if it was a cartful.

Inside the lobby waiting for the shuttle. We're taking the 2:30pm trip.
The shuttle should be here anytime now. I wonder what it looks like...

It looks normal from the outside, but inside -- whoa! Pimp my ride!
Check out the screen and speakers on the ceiling!

On the cab on way back to Oakwood.

Alyannah's pasalubong for Becky!
Look! I bought Barbie toothpaste and Hello Kitty toothbrush!
We scream for ice cream!
